A man uses an old motorized canoe to fish empty plastic bottles out of the Ciliwung River in North Jakarta before they reach the sea. Some hundreds of people, at least, earn money by scouring Jakarta's rivers for cast-off recyclables, but many of them do not have the luxury of owning boats and must wade neck-deep or swim in the heavily polluted water.
